sister Kimberly was gathering evidence,
taking photos, and making phone calls to
the police. Kimberly was suspicious that
Amanda’s partner had attempted to kill her—he’d already threatened to. He’d put his
hands on her neck one too many times.

Amanda Pierce — Story

Texas Wine & True Crime Podcast

On May 14, 2015, Amanda Pierce made two phone calls trying to escape the threats from her then-boyfriend, Brayan Espona had just made to her 24 hours before she is found hanging in the couple’s bedroom closet. Espona told Pierce if she wasn’t out of the house by 7 PM, upon his return from work, he was going to strangle her and get away with it. Two people overhead Amanda sharing this information. The relationship was over.

A 7:14 PM, a call comes in to 911 about a deceased female. Cause of death – suicide. Case closed, or is there more to what happened to Amanda that day.

Thank you to Kimberly Mullens for coming on the show to share your sister’s story. Domestic violence is an ongoing social issue that affects all communities. Please contact your local resources if you or someone you know has questions or just needs someone to listen to what they are dealing with at home. It might just save a life.

Double Standard & Hypocrisy

May 20, 2021

Applying rules & standards unfairly in different ways with different investigations

Episode 5 revealed double standards in Grayson County Texas…. two different investigative approaches in two different domestic violence related homicides. Why?

How Amanda’s case was approached in 2015 goes completely against everything I learned during the forensic conference and citizens police academy.

Chief Flores made the unfair statement that Amanda had a history and they had responded to her mental health in the past….so!

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reverie-true-crime/id1492793721?i=1000521968574

In this episode you’ll hear how autopsies, death investigations and other things SHOULD be conducted from the mouths of a Texas State Ranger, Chief of Police and others versus HOW those things were actually handled in Amanda’s case. Part five is about things that really make you wonder WHY?! What is the REASON that her case and her family have been treated the complete opposite of how they should be?! These things HAVE to change!

Paige Elmore, Reverie True Crime

I cannot believe it’s been SIX Years! Oh, how one responding detective can change the trajectory of so many lives…lives of family & friends who love Amanda dearly. One biased detective who brought his personal prejudice, maybe toward woman, maybe it’s mental health! The blue code of silence keeps their beautiful theory based on BS victim blaming going & going. A violent man roams free….

How do we know he was biased? No interest. From making contact with justice of peace about Amanda’s past history of depression & discussion about no need for autopsy to before the family ever knew the circumstances around her grave brain injury; to intentionally withholding crucial (ALL) evidence for autopsy. Then, committing perjury and falsifying his report to finagle (Texas Ranger Brad Oliver’s word) the evidence to fit his theory!

Finagle is to act in a devious and dishonest manner. Nailed it Ranger Oliver

Here’s something you got to remember—don’t you try to have the evidence fit your theory, you make sure the evidence directs you. That’s a big problem for someone to have. They got this theory and now their trying to finagle the evidence to fit their theory. That’s not what we do!

Texas Ranger Oliver, Forensic Conference

Why do we keep going? Because my baby sister, Amanda Lee Pierce, matters! She is worthy of every single moment we have invested the last 2,190 days. She was someone’s mother, sister, daughter, & friend!

Fairness is treating each person with impartiality and fairness. Treating everyone equally! I’m exhausted…saying the same words—injustice, unfair—over & over.

Guess what? It’s happening all over the United States. Story after story, bereaved family members questioning law enforcement’s final words. Intelligence questioned. Reality screwed. Who stands, or what stands in the gap for misconduct & families? It can happen to ANYONE!

James 2:9
But if you show partiality [prejudice, favoritism], you are committing sin and are convicted by the Law as offenders.
Leviticus 19:15
Judging Fairly: “Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly”

God sees & knows!

The “rotten apple” theory that some administrators propose as the cause of their downfall has frequently been nothing more than a self-serving, superficial façade, intended to draw attention away from their own failures.

Pierce Family Murders

Reverie True Crime with Paige Elmore

Episode 1

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reverie-true-crime/id1492793721?i=1000518614382

The Pierce family women were the best of friends. Mom, Rebecca and her daughters – Vivian, Amanda and Kimberly were so close.
In 2009, Vivian was in an abusive relationship with Damon Butler which turned deadly. Damon took the lives of Vivian and her mother, Rebecca. It was brutal. Kimberly and Amanda made it through that difficult time but unbeknownst to them, there was more devastation to come.
In 2015, Amanda’s boyfriend, Brayan Espana, was also an abuser. They’d been together for a few years but Amanda was ready to finally make her escape and be with her children. Unfortunately, the night she was trying to leave, Brayan called the police. Amanda hanged herself with the cord of an iron. Or…did she? This case is going to have multiple parts. There are a lot of recordings that I have permission to play and I want to make sure that everything Kimberly has collected over the years gets heard. Get ready for a deep dive. #JusticeForAmandaPierce

Episode 2

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reverie-true-crime/id1492793721?i=1000519803520

A family of women had their lives taken by domestic violence abusers with one daughter’s suspicious death having been ruled suicide. Her case was not properly investigated. With her mother and two sisters now gone, Kimberly fights on and hopes that her sister Amanda’s case will finally be reopened and reinvestigated properly.

In part two, I go over major takeaways from the statements we heard in part one. Then we pick up where we left off at the scene with the ambulance arriving. You’ll also hear Amanda’s ex husband and father of their children, Dustin, speak to the detective. You’ll also hear Kimberly and Brayan’s conversation at the hospital.

Episode 3

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reverie-true-crime/id1492793721?i=1000520518445

Amanda Pierce died under extremely suspicious circumstances on May 14, 2015. Her abusive boyfriend, Brayan Espana, claims he came home to find Amanda had hanged herself. But is this the truth? In part three, I’ll point out some odd statements that Brayan made to Kimberly on the recording at the hospital, one of the false statements on the report the detective filled out, why Brayan wasn’t arrested on the scene even though he had outstanding warrants and other issues with this case. There are e-mails from Kimberly and her husband to the detective in this episode, as well as a recording of a meeting Kimberly and her husband had with Detective Jones and Officer Smith.

Throughout this series, Kimberly Mullens has been through so much. Now, she has to deal with the outcome of her sister’s autopsy that is quite arguable. Her family is still dealing with officers who seem not to care and a detective who seems he’s had his mind made up since he got brought onto the case. Stuck between a rock and a hard place what will happen next?

In this episode you’ll hear the full meeting between Kimberly, Justin, Chief of Police Flores and Assistant Chief Jeffcoat. Kimberly and Justin bring up every concern they have. Listen to the answers they are given to their questions. In part seven, I’ll be analyzing certain parts of this meeting and explaining things said by Flores and Jeffcoat which may actually violate laws and procedures.

Part 7 Final Episode

It’s the last episode in the Amanda Pierce series. I really hope that in the future, I’ll be back to say her case has been reopened. In this episode, I’ll go over some important facts from the meeting in part six, the recreation of the scene and where Brayan Espana is now.

This is only the end of the first book. A new book will be written someday and I won’t give up hope about that.

Thank you Kimberly for all of your time, heart and energy you’ve put into helping me with these episodes about your amazing sister. I love you and your family so much.

Grayson County is one of the most corrupt places I’ve ever heard about. There are many people whose family members have been murdered there but the killer was never held responsible and that is the scariest thing…and I don’t understand it.

Grooming & Control

Why Did She Stay?

The grooming started in 2012 by a man who knew exactly what he was doing. He worked at a local store near Amanda’s home. She would stop by for her tall, cold one on the way home from work. Behind the counter every day, giving compliments & being charming. He was luring her into his trap–he was grooming. She believed he was genuine. Predators sense weakness. Amanda struggled with confidence & worth, which, unfortantely allowed her to be duped by this master manipulator.

Brayan Espana lived in Sherman Texas over 10 years illegally. Undocumented & untraceable! Two different aliases, violent criminal record, history of multiple domestic violence (terrorism) charges & 2 outstanding warrants the night of Amanda’s assault.

We cannot blame her…I don’t blame her. Amanda was targeted & groomed by this evil man. Even though she was raised in a household where DV happened. She didn’t witness a majority of the physical abuse, mainly the verbal between our parents. But she knew it happened…why didn’t she see what was happening?

Amanda was targeted & groomed by this evil predator. Classic grooming behaviors & each one used:

  1. Singling out women who struggle with self-esteem & worth issues to make them feel “special”
  2. Making her feel “special” with flattery, charm, lies
  3. Building an emotional connection
  4. Gaining trust
  5. Filling a need
  6. Befriending family members & friends, then pulling her away
  7. Isolating
  8. Entrapping with shame & secrecy
  9. Blaming

Narcissistic abusers come on strong, causing confusion. Gradually conditioning women to accept cycles of violence once they are lured into the relationship. Looking back, it happened so fast. An intentional target set our lives into heartache & pain over the next 3 years. Her beautiful family torn apart from one man’s tactics to take control of her life for his personal gain.

Please never blame the woman. What did she see in him? Why didn’t she leave? Grooming & coercive control are the answers! Self-preservation. Protecting her family from death threats.

Detective Jones made statements to us & wrote in his report like—“she never reported any abuse”…..obviously he has NO understanding of domestic violence or coercion by an abuser. Intimidation, fatal threats to her life & her family’s lives, punishment & humiliation. Victim blaming.

If only Sherman PD would have followed department protocols, procedures & laws on May 14, 2015, our family would have bee able to mourn our loss & heal. They didn’t. Domestic violence laws, both state & federal are in place to clearly define domestic violence, provide protection for victims & seek punishment for those who violate laws! We have relentlessly spent almost SIX years trying to be heard, only to be told “nothing indicates homicide”!

If only she knew her worth, strength & beauty. I know she’s experiencing the LOVE of the Father–healed the way He intended. Amanda is loved & missed by sooooo many. The only person to blame for her death is a smooth-talking evil liar who verbally, emotionally, and brutally beat this beautiful soul.

Trusting God in the Middle

August 12, 2020

To say the past 5 ½ years of our lives has been painful is an understatement. There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not thinking about Amanda and the word justice. I have anger, but it’s righteous anger at the gross miscarriage of justice that we have experienced. I question every thought, idea or dream. Is this the Holy Spirit saying “yes” this is the person, place or time that change will happen? I run toward it sometimes, like a bull; other times, I fret on making a tiny step. Are these constant ideas flowing from my obsessive thoughts or are they promptings to march forward into the battle against a giant?

The build-up going into each meeting is full of hope and confidence. My binder filled with paperwork, photos, and a page full of questions. We have sat across tables with many law officials. Most, if not all, have shut the door, probably hoping this is the last time we see her. I walk away with the same words every time– “nothing indicates homicide”. Every time, I feel deflated, like another punch to the gut that knocks the air out of me. Tears flow and Justin holds me saying I’m sorry.

I question God, “Did I not hear you?” It has to be Him, because this continued strength is not me! Cramming all the files and recordings away, I cry out, “I’m done! Give me peace God, please give me your Peace that surpasses all understanding. I’ll lay it down God if this is not my journey, just give me Peace! I’m tired Father, I’m worn out. I just want to watch Netflix and go to Heaven.”

Damn! Another idea in the middle of the night or driving down the road or scrolling Facebook! Nope, it’s my own head talking….but I don’t have peace until I drag my Rubbermaid tube out of storage and start pouring my energy over police reports, photos I was forced to take, autopsy report & photos, and pages of notes. I’ll email another official or request a different document or search endlessly for another expert to just hear the words “YOUR RIGHT–this could possibly be premeditated murder!” Nope another door slammed shut…process repeated over and over and over for 5 years.

Maybe I’ve already done what I’m supposed to do. Maybe there’s ripples of change being made internally that I may never see. Maybe the vision I thought God gave me while Amanda lay in a hospital bed on life support was my own imagination. Maybe I’m wrong….

But maybe God is using all the slammed doors to expose the real problem for victims of domestic violence. Maybe He’s exposing the lengths that elected and appointed officials will go to protect that “one” biased officer; knowing he’s wrong but loyalty to one another at all levels is more important than justice for all.

One thing I do know, I’m changed. I’m not the same person who sat across from a detective telling me that my sister tried to take her life. Probing me for a history of mental illness and addiction that would corroborate a violent criminal’s claim of suicide. Wholeheartedly believing every word he said, beating myself up because I didn’t answer her call earlier that morning, and trying to come to grips with a broken promise made together just one month earlier. I took on the weight of it being my fault. I protected her from violence from the time she was born; years of trying to save her from herself to my emotional detriment. And just like that, she made a permanent decision. Knowing it was something I couldn’t make it through….

Less than 24 hours later, I’m lying on the floor in the hospital chapel, exhausted, praying for a miracle of healing her dead brain…believing she will have one hell of a testimony! A flash, a scene played out like a 15 second movie…. The man who gave an account of Amanda’s suicide and his efforts to save her life was sitting on her back with a cord wrapped around her neck, strangling her while she lay helpless face down, arms pinned under his knees. A surge of energy took over. I walked up to the front of the chapel toward an open Bible…just a little curious to what it was open to—Jeremiah 29:11:

The very verse that saved my life 10 years before. In a season of contemplation that my family would be better without me. A darkness that was calling me to take my own life. After dropping my kids off at school, I opened my Bible and this very verse gave me a hope that God has a plan for MY life and MY future…prosper me, not harm me! I had a desire to change MY family’s history. Years of doubting my faith and salvation began to fade. The lie whispered ever so often that if I was saved, why do I struggle? Another story another time.

That experience in a little hospital chapel ignited a fighter inside me that I’ve never known. That image kept getting me up, wiping away my salty tears, tucking in my crazy, and moving forward for over 5 years. My spiritual muscles building up, because, let me tell you, if not for the Word of God and prayer, I would not be where I am or who I am today. 914 words later, I still don’t know what the outcome of this journey is going to be; it may not look like I want…accountability and justice, but God does. I have to trust Him, and that is where my peace keeps coming from…I hear ”Trust Me” often, but fear takes over which leads to desperation.

Today, I’m re-centering with the many Words written throughout the Bible. Reminding myself, “Girl, you’ve been on national television…look how far you’ve come!!” A long way from that naïve and trusting person in May of 2015! God loves JUSTICE more than me

Matthew 11:28, 29

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Jeremiah 9:23-24
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”

Proverbs 21:3
To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.

Isaiah 56:1-12
Thus says the Lord: “Keep justice, and do righteousness, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it, and keeps his hand from doing any evil.” Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say, “The Lord will surely separate me from his people”; and let not the eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.” For thus says the Lord: “To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant, I will give in my house and within my walls a monument and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. …

Isaiah 42:1-9
Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: …

The Pain of Injustice: Amanda's Story

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Also I will make justice the measuring line,
And righteousness the plummet;
The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
And the waters will overflow the hiding place. ~
Isaiah 28:17

(All facts can be backed up by witness statements, Sherman PD police reports, recordings & God’s Word)

Wednesday night on May 13, 2015, Amanda and Brayan got into a “big fight” over money. He stole $100 from her, and they fought over it. He told her to be out of the house by 7:00 pm or he would kill her. She told two people (witness statements) the next day that they got into this big fight the night before, it was regarding money he had stolen from her, and she needed to get out. A third witness reports overhearing the conversation.

She had been putting money back to move and get away from him…

If he says he will kill you…. BELIEVE IT!

“Domestic violence incidents, reports, and references were made over 44 times in the detective’s 11 page report.” https://thepainofinjustice.wordpress.com/2016/08/24/domestic-violence/

Was it domestic violence homicide or a desperate person scared for their life deciding to end it all less than two hours after making arrangements to leave? Was her mental illness history the reason she couldn’t have been murdered?

Violent choking is almost entirely confined to fatal domestic attacks on women — while fewer than 1 percent of all homicides result from strangulation, 6 percent of women killed by intimate partners die in this manner, The Post found. It’s also a warning sign. Those who attempt to strangle an intimate partner are far more likely to later commit extreme acts of violence, police and researchers say, and many in law enforcement believe it to be a strong indicator that an abusive relationship could turn fatal. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2018/investigations/domestic-violence-murders/

RIGHTEOUSNESS verses WICKEDNESS

Where do you Stand concerning Justice?

June 28, 2019

“It is a test of the righteous person’s patience and faith when he sees wicked men committing injustice. The Lord waits momentarily to see who will remain loyal to just ways.”

~commentary Psalm 11:4-5 NKJV)

This morning, I had so much to do. My husband & I have a to-do list a mile long. I really felt led to get into the Word, continue our reading plan in Psalms & Proverbs to feed my soul & spirit. Can’t explain it, but it just brings peace and clarity; a right word of encouragement at the right time.

Yesterday a friend asked about Amanda’s case. I told her it’s on the back burner while we are transitioning into a new season of our lives. Every day I think about Amanda…sadness because I miss her & the boys have forever lost their mother; then a burning inside that fuels the fire to move forward and not give up. I don’t dwell on it. I know God keeps speaking to me about plans, details & the injustice affecting many.

I opened my Bible to read Proverbs 11 & Psalm 11. DANG! Verse after verse screamed DON’T QUIT! I’ve copied some of the profound verses at the end of this post. Let them encourage you to keep fighting the good fight. I often have an image of myself as little boy David, standing in front of Goliath–except I get a little tightening in my chest–then something within me says if God is for you who can be against you! I only need to be still & let Him do His thing.

This post is to encourage all the families dealing with injustice. Victimized & re-victimized by a system that is supposed to serve and protect. There was an amazing sermon I listened to yesterday & he made this statement, “All civil leaders are ministers to God”. The criminal justice system is a Biblical concept & comes from the heart of God. Don’t give up families, the ones fighting for justice…you’re not wrong for doing this for your loved ones. The system has to change! The law enforcement & civil leaders involved seem more concerned with protecting their own–not to cross an invisible line. There has to be some kind of earthly accountability.

They will have to answer to God one day. I imagine, based on scripture, it would go something like this:

  • Weren’t you My servant, to be an avenger and carry out My plan for wrongdoers & bring justice? (Romans 13:4);
  • Didn’t I say when justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous, but why didn’t you bring terror to the evildoers? (Proverbs 21:15)
  • Didn’t I say be strong, have courage, mental strength to withstand fear & difficulty; and I would be with you wherever you go? Even against those serving next to you? (Joshua 1:9)
  • It’s ok if the world (fellow law enforcement) hates you… didn’t the world hate me first? (John 15:18)
  • Why did you let the wicked flee from their consequences? I needed you to do what was right to protect the innocent—be bold as a lion! (Proverbs 28:1)
  • Weren’t you supposed to defend the poor and the fatherless? Weren’t you supposed to do justice to the afflicted, abused, and needy? (Psalm 82:3-4)

Pray about your part, ask God what can you do? What if this was your family member? What if you are right & a system is trying to get you to believe their “beautiful theory” with twisted words, lies & excuses? Imagine what could happen if we stood up & said ENOUGH. We could wreck their theories “by a brutal gang of facts”! {Adapted from a quote by French nobleman François de La Rochefoucauld. Read it yesterday & could’t quit thinking about it…many thanks to the one who posted it.}

Proverbs 11
Verses 1-3
Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,
But ajust weight is His delight.
When pride comes, then comes shame;
But with the humble is wisdom.
The integrity of the upright will guide them,
But the perversity of the unfaithful will destroy them.
Verses 5-6
The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way aright,
But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright will deliver them,
But the unfaithful will be caught by their lust. (lust of the flesh-pride)

Verses 10-11
When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices;
And when the wicked perish, there is jubilation.
11 By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted,
But it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

Verses 18-21
The wicked man does deceptive work,
But he who sows righteousness will have a sure reward.
19 As righteousness leads to life,
So he who pursues evil pursues it to his own death.
20 Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the Lord,
But the blameless in their ways are His delight.
21 Though they joinforces, the wicked will not go unpunished;
But the posterity of the righteous will be delivered.

Verse 23
The desire of the righteous is only good,
But the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

Verses 27-31
He who earnestly seeks good finds favor,
But trouble will come to him who seeks evil.
28 He who trusts in his riches will fall,
But the righteous will flourish like foliage.
29 He who troubles his own house will inherit the wind,
And the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.
30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life,
And he who wins souls is wise.
31 If the righteous will be recompensed on the earth,
How much more the ungodly and the sinner.
